I started playing piano at the age of ten; I visited a friend who was practicing piano and had a go myself, I could play the piece they were learning quickly, in no time at all my mum had me going to lessons.
My teacher was a retired concert pianist and I was in awe of her playing and wanted to play like her. After 10 months I entered my first competition and won! At 12 years old I won my school competition playing a famous sonata. I played until I was 16, then, after a family loss I had to leave playing and go out to work, putting the piano on the back burner for a while.
After many years of not having enough room in our house for a piano I finally got one. So I found myself another teacher and went through my grades rapidly up to grade 8 piano solo and grade 5 music theory. After that I achieved my Associates Diploma with Honours in piano teaching with the Victoria College of Music, with the examiners complimenting my intuitive teaching ability and a thorough understanding of music theory and learning practice.
I have a basic structure for lessons and once I’ve assessed the pupil, I adapt the lesson to suit their ability.
I can teach all styles of music from classical to modern and lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes long, depending upon the level of the student and whether or not they are studying for exams. Parents are encouraged to stay during lessons, if they wish to, especially with small children.
Theory of Music is taught during the lesson and homework can be given if they wish to study at home. Scales, arpeggios, broken chords etc., are an important part of the learning process and taught from the start. Pupils find these tedious at times but after some help in understanding the importance of these they are more willing to practice.
Another part of the lesson is sight reading and how to prepare for the part in the exam that everyone dreads!
As we all learn at a different pace, I generally start complete beginners off with basic keyboard layouts and explain position of notes and fingering. I would work towards having a pupil able to read the first 5 notes from middle “C” and working towards a simple tune by the end of the first lesson.
I use John W. Shaum music books and also Alfred Adult Beginners book to start pupils off, as we progress then so will the music and it becomes fun for the pupil to achieve a better standard each week.
As you progress, your lesson will consist of:
Scalework; exercises; sight reading; theory of pieces; own choice, exam and performance pieces where applicable.
Exams are offered, however, some students prefer to play just for their own enjoyment.
